Twist and Stout
Spray Paint and Acrylic on 20" x 24" canvas
Cork is a city synomous with porter. Over the centuries there have been dozens of breweries producing the black stuff in the city, most notably Murphy's and Beamish. This canvas however pays homage to St. Finbarr's Brewery, owned by Sir John Arnott of Arnotts Department Stores fame at the end of the 19th century. This brewery, operating on what is today called Sharman Crawford St, was producing Arnott's Prize Medal Porter, for which an old advertising sign, or 'ghost sign', still exists on a building at the bottom of Shandon. In this canvas, the sign has been reworked into an old advert with a twist.
